ACADEMIC PROGRAMS AT SOM

AIT School of Management is Asia's pioneer business school for graduate studies offering Ph.D., MBA and diploma programs in three focus areas:

Management of Technology (MOT)

International Business (IB)

International Public Management (IPM)

SOM’s academic programs are of international standard and are adapted to the needs and challenges of the economies in an increasingly competitive region. Given the rapidly changing environment of modern management, the academic programs emphasize an understanding of fundamental concepts; application of analytical and value-added techniques; insights into human qualities and behaviour, and the ability to synthesize the human and technological aspects of management into unifying frameworks. Personal analytical judgment, autonomous learning capabilities and entrepreneurial skills are also developed.

DBA PROGRAM

AIT-SOM is offering a new program - Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) for senior professional managers/administrators. The DBA program is intended to create a body of knowledge embedded in practice. The first DBA program is being offered at AIT Campus in Thailand, Sri Lanka at the International College of Business and Technology (ICBT) Campus and Vietnam (Hanoi and HCMC) at the AITCV.

Purpose

SOM’s DBA programme aims to train senior management professionals to develop and hone management theories to enhance their leadership and strategic skills, make contribution to management practice and create additional value for their organisations. The programme will enable participants to acquire advanced management knowledge and research skills. They will be prepared to carry out research in organizational contexts using their practical experience and translating it into management theories.

The ultimate academic objective of SOM’s DBA programme is to develop and disseminate “grounded” theories based on Asian business practices including developing case studies and industry analyses.

Advantages

The program will provide an opportunity to practising managers to investigate the ongoing practices of the Asian companies and develop new contextual theories, or theories that will complement those built around the practices of the Western companies. There are several companies in Asia like Samsung, Acer, Haier, Infosys, and National Dairy Development Board of India, Gramin Bank, Tata, Ceylinco, CP Group etc. which have excellent performance and have deviated from established practices. Hence, they provide excellent opportunity for research and developing new management paradigms or theories entrenched in Asian practices.

• Interdisciplinary Perspective: The DBA curriculum is designed based on the needs and preferences sought by our MBA/EMBA alumni and industry experts. It is interdisciplinary, integrative and adopts a holistic approach. The required course work is structured into three perspectives: Research Methodology, Knowledge Building and Research Specialization including Thesis writing component.

• Multinational Faculty: The intellectual atmosphere at SOM is characterized by the diversity and flexibility of the faculty. The faculty represents a wide range of management concerns and research interests. A key element of SOM is a faculty that excels both in research and in teaching and particularly, executive education. In addition, most have had extensive experience in industry and/or consultancy. They balance theoretical and practical concerns in both their teaching and research. A highly qualified and experienced faculty from 12 countries facilitates the student learning and provides a real multi-cultural approach to management education. • Education Environment: SOM provides individuals with a supportive environment in which they can develop their skills and aptitudes, helping them to reach their professional goals and to serve the interests of countries in the Asia-Pacific region. There is an international approach to management education with SOM's faculty having extensive experience in Asia and the rest of the world. Courses and their contents are adapted to the needs of managers who will be operating in Asia.

A student can carry out research in any one area integrating it with strategic management and other managerial functions.

• Opportunity for SOM to differentiate itself from other business schools in Asia.
• SOM’s existing Ph.D. program and proposed DBA program will complement each other.
• Ph. D. program focuses on research works embedded in theories from social sciences and humanities, and prepares students for teaching and research-related jobs.
• DBA is a professional doctorate program, where the research is rooted in the context of professional practice making a significant contribution to management practice, policy or strategy.
• Two programs have different segmentation and cater to research context of each segment. Both programs are of equal value and quality aiming at different target groups. Both involve the development of substantial standard research work

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS & PROCEDURES

Entry Requirements
• Minimum 10 years’ work experience, of which at least 3 years’ experience in senior management/administrative position.
• MBA/EMBA from recognised academic institutions or corporate universities.
• Other Master’s degree subject to the completion of MBA-level required courses as specified by the DBA program faculty. However, for students with 15 years’ work experience, of which 7 years’ experience in senior management/ administrative position, the additional completion of MBA-level required courses, will not be required.
• Proof of proficiency in English language.
• A letter from CEO/head of organizations supporting the candidate’s application and research work.
• A write-up on proposed research theme.

Selection Process
The selection to the program will be based on several criteria such as academic qualifications, experience, professional accomplishments, level of responsibility of the applicant and statement of purpose. An interview may also be arranged before the final selection is made. The selected applicants will be informed at least one month prior to start of the program.

TUITION FEES

The cost of the program is US Dollars 25,000 which includes registration fee, tuition fee, and course materials. The fee is payable into 5 instalments. The first instalment of USD 5,000 must be paid before registration.

In case the candidate is not able to complete the degree within three years (6 semesters), the registration fee of USD 600 per semester will be charged for each semester under extension.

Duration and Credits

The program is normally to be completed within 3 years based on requirement of 84 credits (1 credit=15 contact hours). All students will be required to complete course work equivalent to 24 credits and thesis writing of 60 credits. (See detail course outlines on page 7-8)
The distribution of courses will be as follows:

I. Research Methodology Perspective: Three research methodology courses and a research communication course (7 credits) are required courses for all.  The courses are:

II. Knowledge Building Perspective

Seven advanced management courses (14 credits) are common required courses for all and are as follows:

·         Advanced Strategic Management of Technology                    (2 credit)

·         Advanced Corporate Finance                                                  (2 credit)

·         Advanced Management Control System                                  (2 credit)

·         Advanced Organization Behaviour and Development                        (2 credit)

III. Research Specialisation Perspective

A 3-credit advance course or special study in the area of specialization.  The course or special study will be tailor-made to student’s research focus, and will require understanding and critical review of the theories and research in the field of specialisation.  The student will be required to prepare a Review Paper based on published research papers.

 

IV. Thesis writing (60 credits): This segment will include writing and defending of thesis proposal, forming thesis advisory committee, and completing and defending thesis.

 

 


Course Delivery

The courses will be offered in seminar mode and in modular form. Both in-class contact and extensive use of online interaction will be involved in teaching and learning each course. Each student will be supervised by a committee of faculty members. Committee will also consist of external experts, including highly experienced industry professionals.

Dissertation

• Students will defend the dissertation proposal within one semester (about 6 months) of completing the course work.
• The writing of a dissertation is a must.
• As per AIT practice, thesis will be sent for evaluation to external examiner.
• The final defence will take place once the student has completed all requirements of the programme.
• The maximum time allowable for DBA is 5 years.

Graduation

Graduation requires successful defence of dissertation. Further, based on the dissertation, graduation also requires completion of one publishable quality comprehensive case with a teaching note accepted by a reputable case clearing house or peer reviewed journal that publishes management cases. Alternatively, the student may publish a research article in refereed professional journal.

DESCRIPTION OF REQUIRED & ELECTIVE COURSES

SM62.01 Qualitative Research Methods in Management
This course covers research methods with an emphasis on qualitative research techniques. It includes topics on observational field research, case histories, narratives, and case studies, interviewing, principles of action research, evaluation and grounded theory. It examines the strengths of alternative methods and the connection between qualitative and quantitative research methods.

SM62.02 Communication for Management Research
This course aims to develop and enhance participants’ ability to communicate their research data and results in both written and oral form. Communication of scholarly research is somewhat different than managerially oriented writing. This course has the objective of helping new DBA students to improve their writing and presentation skills so that they become successful at publishing and conference presentations. Formats for both thesis writing and internationally refereed journal articles will be examined. By the end of the course, participants should have an expanded ability to communicate their research data and results with academic quality and rigor.

SM62.10 Research Design & Data Collection
The course examines the process of research in business and management and the collection and representation of data. Students will learn a structured approach to the research process from defining the research question through the selection of methods to producing a final thesis. In the first part, research methodologies are discussed with the emphasis on relating theory to practice. In the second part of the course concepts of data collection are discussed including survey techniques, interviews and experiments. The course is conducted as a workshop for a critical review of published research from a student-centered perspective.

SM62.11 Data Analysis and Interpretation
The course aims at providing the doctoral students with statistical techniques and skills for analyzing quantitative data that may be required for their research. The emphasis is on practical uses of these tools in real databases in order to discover and prove new scientific facts and relationships. Some mistakes most commonly committed in the process are discussed.

SM62.20 Theories and Models of Markets
The underlying objective of this course is to develop understanding of the evolution and functioning of markets using diverse theories of economics, behavioural science, sociology and political science. The behaviours of markets will be examined on the basis of a business simulation to demonstrate the impacts of different models.

SM62.30 Advanced Corporate Finance
The objectives of course are to explore the important elements and research issues in corporate finance decision making, to present strategic finance issues integrating with strategy and other functional areas and to develop in participants the competence to manage complex strategic decisions, through interplay of corporate finance and its linkage to competitive strategies.

SM62.31 Advanced Management Control Systems
This course intends to provide three different perspectives for the study of Management Control Systems (MCS) including Structures; Procedures; and Context. It will also develop skills for designing, implementing, and operating an effective control system for different organization contexts. Students will learn the process by which managers influence other members of the organization to implement the organization’s strategies.

SM62.40 Advanced Organizational Behaviour & Development
This course aims at developing a deeper level of appreciation for the issues and trends in Organizational Behaviour. It is assumed that the participants have exposure to the basic issues through formal exposure as well as their experiences of practices. This overview of the field would enable them to find connections with practice and help them in developing an integrated perspective on management.

SM62.50 Advanced Marketing Management
The course is designed to evaluate and practice case research in the field of marketing management. It shall provide students with the skills to identify and relate theoretical concepts to strategic marketing practices of a company. Though an intensive case study course, the purpose is to analyze cases thoroughly from a conceptual viewpoint and to reflect on the issues of generalization, contingency and research methods. In particular, the impact of the Asian context on marketing management practices compared to those in the US and how to incorporate contextual factors in marketing research is a major theme of the course. The course requires the student to integrate basic issues in marketing management such a product policy, pricing, and distribution decisions.

SM62.70 Advanced Strategic Management of Technology
In the face of rapid globalization and liberalization, understanding the strategic potential of technology has become a crucial issue in today’s competitive business environment. The ability of the modern-day managers to analyze and make strategic decisions with respect to the technologies has an important bearing on the competitiveness of the firms.

The main objective of this course is to provide the participants with necessary knowledge and tools to appreciate, anticipate, acquire, and use technology for attaining a competitive edge at the market place. The emphasis would be to relate the practical experiences of the participants with the theories, and frameworks developed for deeper understanding.

SM62.80 Advanced Strategic Management
The course is designed to develop understanding of context and practices of strategy and the nature of theoretical traditions in the field of strategic management. Through seminars and case studies the students will discover the external and internal challenges faced by strategic leaders and entrepreneurs in strategizing and implementing strategic change. The real life exercises will help the participants to acquire necessary skills and competences of strategists.
