Regional Training Workshop on “Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA)”

Following the training program on Principles of Environmental Impact Assessment Review which was conducted in collaboration with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and with great support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Bank (WB) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Vietnam Learning Center on Environmental and Social Sustainability (LC) organized a training course on Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) from 21 to 23 April, 2017 in Hanoi.

The course was facilitated by two senior Environmental Experts/Lecturers and attended by 13 participants who are from governmental agencies, universities, consulting firms and also NGOs in Vietnam, Myanmar, China and Indonesia. Most of the participants are very young and active in all learning activities, sharing experience and ideas with others and eager to learn from others. The training course used different participatory learning methods which created a friendly and active learning environment where there were not any barriers between learners and trainers or facilitators.

Similar to other public training courses which are open to participants from different regional countries who are interested in EIA, this training face some challenges such as language barriers, difference in safeguards policies and guidelines, in knowledge levels and experience. However, based on the lessons learned from previous training programs daily course evaluation was applied to timely identify and solve any problems or gaps that may occur during the course.

In general, the course was going well all three days and concluded with a high appreciation from participants and satisfied the facilitators and organizers. The Leaning Center is going to organize two other ESIA courses and two Involuntary Resettlement courses in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in May, 2017.
