  • Teaching and Research Interests: Economic Meaning of Tourism
  • Received his doctoral degree in economics in 1961 at the N.E.H., nowadays Erasmus university in Rotterdam (cum laudae).
  • Director-general of the Regional Development Authority of West-Flanders and WES (Westvlaams Ekonomisch Studiebureau), a market leader in tourism research in Belgium, during the period 1979-2000.
  • A member of several international tourism organisations, such as the Tourist Research Centre (TRC – Association of Tourist Research Institutes) as Secretary-general since 1965; AIEST as Vice-President since 1994; Founding Fellow of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism; and IATE (International Association for Tourism Economics).
  • Published extensively among which The Economics of Tourism Destinations (Elsevier- Butterworth-Heinemann, 2005).
  • Particularly interested in the tourism research topics: economic impact, project evaluation, competition analysis, strategic planning and marketing.
  • A member of the Editorial Advisory Board of ‘Tourism Review’
  • A member of the board of directors of WES and the College of Europe (treasurer).
  • Honoured with several awards and distinctions such as: Crowned with the bi-annual price of the Association for Economy (1961); Prize Pro Civitate (1973) and Law and Local Economy (1972); Nominated officer in the Order of the Crown (1994); and Nominated Grand Officer in the order of King Leopold II (2005)
